I would say that my musical taste is very eclectic, but as far as an artist that makes you think you can't really beat Brett Dennen. While I wouldn't exactly call his lyrics Christian, they have an overall message that i think we all need to hear. A couple of these lines expecially strike me, one being "I wonder how so many can be in so much pain, while others don't seem to feel a thing." This interests me because it makes me question whether or not we should or do care for people enough.
The other verse that interests me is the last. I think that he is trying to say something about the consumerism that seems to....consume(?) Americans today. This is an issue that i somewhat agree with; but also, I believe that it sometimes gets blown way out of proportion. I think that at some point all of us will need to just lay down and stare a hole in the sky wondering where we go when we die. Now that is not to say that we're all going to become non-Christians and turn away from our faith. But i do believe that everyone needs to think about what exactly they believe. I think this song is pretty darn fantastic!
When I heard the news, my heart fell on the floor.
I was on a plane on my way to Baltimore.
In these troubled times it's hard enough as it is.
My soul has a known a better life than this.
I wonder how so many can be in so much pain, while others don't seem to feel a thing.
Then I curse my whiteness and I get so damn depressed.
In a world of suffering, why should I be so blessed?
I heard about a women who lives in Colorado.
She built a monument of sorts behind the garage door,
where everyday she prays for all whom are born
and all whose souls have passed on.
Sometimes my trouble gets so thick, I can't see how I'm gonna get through it.
But, then I'd rather be stuck up in a tree then be tied to it.
There is so much more.
I don't feel comfortable with the way my clothes fit.
I cant get used to my bodys limits.
I got some fancy shoes to try and kick away these blues.
They cost a lot of money but they arent worth a thing.
I wanna free my feet from the broken glass and concrete.
I need to get out of this city.
Lay upon the ground stare a hole in the sky, wondering where I go when I die

that really is a great thought. people who know what they believe and why? instead of just following along blindly? what? that's ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThese lyrics are quite profound i like the overall theme that the artist is saying. Why i am so lucky while others are left in pain. the song has a lot of truth

ReplyDelete--Very deep thought. I would wholly agree, and I do think it is not a compromise of one's faith to do so. Figuring why we believe what we believe is indeed essential for anybody's existence.
I also love the part of your discussion that timmer quoted, and also agree completely. The American culture that we live in focuses so much on being financial and social successes (among other things) that the things that really matter (i.e. what happens to us after we die--especially if there's an eternity) get put on the back burner.
